Measure your Windows for Curtains

Whether you buy your own curtains, buy off the shelf or order custom made, knowing the correct measurements for your window is key.

  1. Decide what kind of curtains you want.
  2. Decide where the curtain rod will go.  You’ll probably want it positioned about 15cm (6in) above the window frame, but you may want it higher or lower (or even – for dramatic look on a tall, deep window – inside the frame).
  3. Decide how much coverage you want.  Curtains usually extend about 15cm above the window frame, 6 to 8cm on each side, and 6 to 8cm on the bottom.  Consider how much light you want to block out.
  4. Use a tape measure to measure from the curtain rod to the bottom point and from side to side.  Multiply the side-to-side measurement by two to allow for generously full curtains.
